Lil Wayne is the cover story in VIBE's November 2007 issue, and Antonia "Toya" Carter, Lil Wayne's first wife, wanted to give her side of the story:
VIBE.com: How did your marriage come about? Toya Carter: Wayne and I were dating since middle school. That wasn't his first time proposing to me. He actually proposed to me my second Mother's Day. So you were 16? Yes, we were like 16, 17 when he first proposed to me, but we were 21 when we decided to get married. I was 20, he was 21. You guys were together that entire time? Yeah, on and off. When he started dating Nivea, I didn't know anything about it. Then I found out and he admitted it to me that he was dating her and that's when the marriage came apart. That's why you can't believe everything you hear. It's crazy how it goes. We were planning a wedding, and he was with Nivea. Him and Nivea split up and six months later me and him were married. It was crazy. Not saying that he didn't care about Nivea; that was his girlfriend at the time, but I guess after a while he got tired of that and he came to me and said he wanted his family back and proposed to me. We had a wedding six months later. A nice wedding. We got married on Valentine's Day, February 2004. And this was already when he was well into his career? It wasn't like is now, but he was still at a good point in his career... I think this right before The Carter dropped. Was it a good marriage? Were you happy, was he creepin' out? Yeah, Wayne is the type who likes to have his cake and eat it, too. So we were together, but that didn't stop him from doing what he had to do and I wasn't happy with that. A person can only take so much. I filed for a divorce January 1st. I wanted to start my new year off right because I was going to Atlanta and I was hearing all of these things - he's with this one, he's with that one. I'm thinking maybe he wasn't ready to get married but that's not what he was telling me. He was saying he's a changed man and he's giving the game up. I knew he wasn't really meaning that, but I at least thought that he'd still put family first. We were married for two years. We didn't get divorced until the beginning of '06. That's when the whole Trina thing came about. Was there ever any drug use? Did that ever affect your relationship? Because he talks about it a lot; was that ever something in his life that it was so heavy that it affected anything? No, that wasn't nothing. It was more of him just fooling. Women, women, women. With the guys all day. No time with the kid. We get no time. We just fall in where we fall in. That's not how it's supposed to be. Do you think he'll ever change or is that just the person that he is? To be honest with you, I don't think that that part will ever change. Whoever he decides to be with in the future -- they are just going to have to accept that. They're never going to get time. They're never going to get Wayne, fully Wayne. Do you hear rumors about him and Karrine Steffans? All I have to say about that is some that for some people, the word love is loose terminology. Everybody: Trina, Nivea, Karrine, whoever it may be. Is there anything you would want to clarify? Yeah, the reason I was speaking out is because I feel like being a baby mother, I'm bound by unwritten code - a code of silence. So most rappers... I'm not going to say rappers - Dwayne - they say things because they know we will never get the chance to voice the truth and we just have to suck it up because this is the way we eat. But I've come to a point where I'm really fed up with it. A person can only take so much. I just want to tell the truth and I just wanted clear that up. It's not to make him look bad in the interview. It's just to let people know I've never been Wayne's stylist. His mother didn't make me marry him; that was something he wanted to do. He proposed to me twice. His mother didn't ask him to go around asking girls to have a baby. That didn't happen. My daughter came about because we were in love and young. There's just a lot of things that he said in his interview that just is not true. Like Wayne will call me all the time when he's not having a good day just to talk. We are each other's go-to person. It's really not what he makes it to be to the world. I just recently asked him about this interview and made me look like a complete ass and said his mother made me marry him, like we were never in love. Like we never had anything. Like I was your jumpoff. Like I just came along and fell in. That is not what happened. Don't act like we never had nothing and you don't have love for me.
