R&B legend Ike Turner has passed away today at the age of 76 according to TMZ.com.
Reports say that Turner died in his sleep at his San Marcos, Calif., home.
Ike was best known for his music and tumultuous relationship with Tina Turner. The duo had seven top ten R&B songs together. But their relationship wasn't as good as the music they made together. They divorced in 1978 amidst reports of Ike's constant physical abuse towards Tina.
Ike is often credited with creating the first true Rock N Roll song called "Rocket 88."
Ike, who was married four times, is survived by four children: sons Ike Jr., Michael, Ronald and daughter Mia.
The Recording Academy released the following statement about his passing:
"There is no doubt that Ike Turner was one of rock and roll's great architects with his genre-defying sound as an instrumentalist and bandleader ... As a two-time GRAMMY® Award winner and recipient of The Recording Academy's 2004 Heroes Award, Ike's legacy as a groundbreaking pioneer in the music industry will never be forgotten."
A representative for Ike's former wife Tina Turner released the following statement:
"Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today," the rep told TMZ. "She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made."
