Pardon if this comes off the wrong way, and I’m not deliberately trying to make an example of newcomer Rocko Da Don, but in an interview with Allhiphop.com, he put his foot in his mouth and totally disrespected hip-hop music.

Rocko, who apparently put aside a career as a music business manager to become an artist and release his single “Umma Do Me,” said,

“At first I was more cash motivated; just tryin’ to keep the dollars coming in. I knew I had what it takes because all that rap is [is having] swagger and just making words rhyme and tell stories and things of that nature. So, I already knew I had it what it took. I had to make up my mind if that was something I wanted to do. So, initially it was all cash motivated, but then once I really got into it, I started liking it. I started kind of digging it.”

Wow. Did he really just say that? I don’t know Rocko. He’s probably a good guy. I’m not trying to throw him under the bus here, and at least he was honest. But c’mon, all rap is swagger and making words rhyme? Is that really it??

The sad thing is that Rocko’s attitude is shared by the millions of people out there trying to make it as rappers. People see hip-hop as one big money pit, a way to get rich, and try to get involved in it just for that. These people are really messing the game up. Fans and just people who listen to music in general, they’re so numb to what hip-hop has become- a bunch of folks who start rapping just for the money- that they don’t buy into it anymore. You get one hit single and then you’re gone.

I don’t like to lament on the past, but it’d be dope if we could return to a time when artists really and truly and wanted to be artists. A time when they didn’t just do it because they saw dollar signs. Hip-Hop needs more of those type of people involved with it before it can recover from the malaise it’s currently going through.

THIS WAS JACKED FROM SUCKAFREE...I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING COMMENTARY.
